Room 16's Maths Strategies

Yay for Tuesdays!

I love coming in to see all the lovely students at Western Heights Primary on my Tuesdays in School and I'm super happy that I could spend some time working with Room 16 on their mathematical strategies.

Here, Eesha is working on her 9 times tables using the hand strategy I taught her. She folds back one finger at a time from 1 to 10 and using place value, counts her tens and ones to find the answers to her multiplication problem.

Chelsea is learning to use tidy numbers for 2 digit numbers. She is learning to use part-whole strategies so that she can solve BIG equations like 65 + 72! Well done, Chelsea :)

I really enjoyed Mrs. M.R.'s Counting by 2's, 5's and 10's video! What a great way to learn how to count!

Justin and Veronica are working hard with their number line strategy where you have an equation like 9 + 5.  First, you must find the larger number, 9 on the number line and place a counter on the 9. Then, you must count on 5 from the counter. Then place your counter on the new number, 14. That is your answer!

Great work Room 16. I'm so pleased with all of your effort and excitement with maths strategies! :)

Aryan's Sharing

Today, Aryan brought in his very special Transformers figurines to share with the class.

These were his favourite toys and we were very lucky to have Aryan share with us in Room 16.

I really liked how Aryan spoke in a clear voice and showed us how you could transform the toys and open up different compartments within the figurines.

Thank you Aryan for sharing! :)

Nicoles Piano Performance

Nicole was so brave last Friday when she performed three tunes on the piano for the whole of the Middle School.  Her performance really was outstanding.

Room 16's Science Experiment on Sound with Miss Kim

Today, Miss Kim taught Room 16 about the Properties of Sound. We explored how sound is created, how it is heard, what the definitions of pitch and volume are, and how pitch can be changed.

First, we started by having a discussion about what we already knew about sound, brainstorming ideas about pitch, volume, how sound is carried, and what vibrations are. Then we did some inquiry on sound and watched a quick BrainPOP video on the science of sound.

Next, we got to do an experiment called 'Musical Glasses' where we placed differing
amounts of water into glasses and played them with a metal spoon to test their pitch.

We then recorded the data we found and made conclusions as to which glass had
the highest and lowest pitch, and how we could change the pitch of the glass.
We found out that the glass with the least amount of water made a higher pitched sound
than the glass with the most amount of water.

We even had to do a quick 10 multi-choice quiz at the end to see how much we had learned
from Miss Kim's science class! We had so much fun making music with the glasses
and learning about the science of sounds! Thank you Miss Kim! :)

Room 16 working on their art with Mrs. Moyle. Mrs. Moyle visits our class every Tuesday and the children have been learning to create vivid and dye pictures using patterning designs from their personal pattern 'bank'.

Mrs. Moyle showing Nandhini a new technique.

Week 9

As the weather is cooling down we have decided that there will be no more swimming this term.  We will now be doing a sport rotation on a Thursday afternoon.  The focus for this will be bat and ball skills.
We are doing lots of great learning at the moment.  The kids are working hard every day.  Mrs M.R and I are so pleased in particular with their efforts in Procedural Writing.  Also the improvements in Reading with lots of children moving up reading levels.
Don't forget to bring Poem Folders and Home Learning books every Monday.
We are encouraging the children to choose their library books very carefully.  They are allowed to take one book home for reading at night.  The other book is to be kept in their tote trays to have a substantial book to read during SSR.
There will be a Middle School Assembly at 10.45 on Friday.
Oh yes, one final reminder.....don't forget to visit www.spellingcity.com as a tool to help with spelling words!
See you next week!

Procedural Writing

In class we are learning how to write instructions.  This is called Procedural Writing.
Today we were writing instructions on how to cross a road safely. We went out to the crossing as a class to physically practice and walk through the steps. Below is a sequence of photos showing the steps.
After we practiced the steps we went back to class and wrote down the whole process of How To Cross The Road Safely.
