Room 16's Assembly Item with Room 28

Today for assembly, Room 16 and Room 28 shared a few items with the school.

Room 16 were busy during the week assembling their "thinking hats" and reasoning behind which thinking hat best reflected their personalities. Room 28 painted some trees to show the falling of the autumn leaves, along with a beautiful song and choreographed actions that they shared during assembly.

We were all very lucky to hear Nicole play us a piece on the keyboard. Nicole you are so talented and special, thank you for your beautiful piano piece!

Lucky last, I was able to lead Room 16 in the Korean Strawberry Counting game. Well done everyone!  There was such great concentration and focus, you did a great job :)

Well done Room 16 and Room 28! We are so proud of you!!

Term Two

Hi Everyone,
We hope that you have had a fantastic Easter break with your families.  We are both refreshed and well planned for a fantastic Term 2.
We have the Zoo Trip coming up in Week 5.  There will be a lot of Inquiry based learning around The Zoo.  We also have a big Mural planned for Art as one of our culminating tasks based on the Zoo trip.
Bible in Schools starts at 9am on Thursday morning.  Middle School also has their Arts and Sports rotation on a Thursday afternoon.
Room 16 along with our buddy class Room 28 will be hosting the Whanau Time Assembly on Friday Week One.  Room 16 will be presenting a Higher Order Thinking Hats Skills Activity.  Room 28 will be sharing a Seasonal Activity and a song.
Make sure the children come to School with running shoes each day as we are practising for the School Cross Country.
Another great idea would be to pack some spare clothes in their school bags in case they get wet during the school day.
Also with Winter colds hitting; can we please have children bring in a box of tissues each to store for those runny noses!!!
We look forward to seeing you all first week back on May the 5th!!
Lots of Love Mrs M.R and Mrs G

Room 16's Maths Strategies

Yay for Tuesdays!

I love coming in to see all the lovely students at Western Heights Primary on my Tuesdays in School and I'm super happy that I could spend some time working with Room 16 on their mathematical strategies.

Here, Eesha is working on her 9 times tables using the hand strategy I taught her. She folds back one finger at a time from 1 to 10 and using place value, counts her tens and ones to find the answers to her multiplication problem.

Chelsea is learning to use tidy numbers for 2 digit numbers. She is learning to use part-whole strategies so that she can solve BIG equations like 65 + 72! Well done, Chelsea :)

I really enjoyed Mrs. M.R.'s Counting by 2's, 5's and 10's video! What a great way to learn how to count!

Justin and Veronica are working hard with their number line strategy where you have an equation like 9 + 5.  First, you must find the larger number, 9 on the number line and place a counter on the 9. Then, you must count on 5 from the counter. Then place your counter on the new number, 14. That is your answer!

Great work Room 16. I'm so pleased with all of your effort and excitement with maths strategies! :)

Aryan's Sharing

Today, Aryan brought in his very special Transformers figurines to share with the class.

These were his favourite toys and we were very lucky to have Aryan share with us in Room 16.

I really liked how Aryan spoke in a clear voice and showed us how you could transform the toys and open up different compartments within the figurines.

Thank you Aryan for sharing! :)

Nicole was so brave last Friday when she performed three tunes on the piano for the whole of the Middle School.  Her performance really was outstanding.

Room 16's Science Experiment on Sound with Miss Kim

Today, Miss Kim taught Room 16 about the Properties of Sound. We explored how sound is created, how it is heard, what the definitions of pitch and volume are, and how pitch can be changed.

First, we started by having a discussion about what we already knew about sound, brainstorming ideas about pitch, volume, how sound is carried, and what vibrations are. Then we did some inquiry on sound and watched a quick BrainPOP video on the science of sound.

Next, we got to do an experiment called 'Musical Glasses' where we placed differing
amounts of water into glasses and played them with a metal spoon to test their pitch.

We then recorded the data we found and made conclusions as to which glass had
the highest and lowest pitch, and how we could change the pitch of the glass.
We found out that the glass with the least amount of water made a higher pitched sound
than the glass with the most amount of water.

We even had to do a quick 10 multi-choice quiz at the end to see how much we had learned
from Miss Kim's science class! We had so much fun making music with the glasses
and learning about the science of sounds! Thank you Miss Kim! :)
